War Memorial

Whose names are immortalised on war memorials in towns and villages across the country? Where did they live, how and why did they die? In War Memorial.

Clive Aslet unravels the stories of twenty-two men and one woman on one village memorial to provide an intimate portrait of twentieth century life recognizable to anyone in Britain. Yet these extraordinary tales of endurance and bravery from otherwise ordinary people - farmers, masons, railway-workers, landowners, schoolchildren - would be lost but for the war memorial. From the battles of the First and Second World Wars to the conflicts of the Falklands and Iraq, War Memorialis about never forgetting the people who laid down their lives for us.
